ULEZ Scrappage Scheme

As of today, London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is expanding. From now the zone has expanded from the area inside the North Circular and South Circular roads to pretty much all of greater London  – covering pretty much everything within the M25. About the ULEZ

Drivers of older vehicles that are deemed to be more polluting must pay £12.50 per day to enter the ULEZ. This includes those who live within it. Owing to the fact that the 2023 expansion ot the zone covers such a large area, Transport for London has announced a scrappage scheme to help those replace cars that fall foul of the ULEZ emission requirements. In order to qualify for your stake in the £110m scrappage scheme you will need to be in receipt of certain benefits. If you own a small business then you will be able to replace vans and minibuses that are non-compliant under the scheme.

Am I eligible for the ULEZ scrappage scheme?

If your car isn’t ULEZ compliant and you live in greater London, then it may be sensible to replace your car with one that is. If you’re disabled or in a low income then the new scrappage scheme is designed to help you. To apply you must live within one of the 32 Boroughs of London and claim at least one of the below benefits:

If you are a sole trader you can also apply for a scrappage grant for your van. And charities and small business can also receive the grant providing they have 50 or fewer employees.

Is my Car eligible for the ULEZ Scrappage scheme?

In order to be able to scrap your vehicle then it must:

• be registered with the DVLA to the applicant’s address and owned for more than 12 months before 23 October 2019.
• be insured
• have a valid MOT certificate
• be taxed
• fall short of the ULEZ emission standards

What are the ULEZ emission standards?

The ULEZ standards are that vehicles must meet Euro 4 emisisons standards for petrol cars and Euro 6 emissions standards for diesel cars. In general this means diesel cars built before 2015 and petrol cars built before 2005. How much with the ULEZ Scrappage scheme save me?

If you buy a new car and take advantage of the ULEZ scrappage scheme then you can save £2,000. For new motorcycles and mopeds you can save £1,000. Your new vehicle must meet the ULEZ standards and must replace a vehicle that currently does not.

Anyone who scraps a wheelchair-accessible vehicle can receive £5,000 towards the cost of a new one. Small businesses will get £5,000 for their van and £7,000 for their minibus. You can also apply for a £5,000 grant to make your van or minibus compliant with a retro-fitted device. If replacing your vehicle with an electric one you can get £7,500 or £9,500 for your van or minibus respectively.
